Mind Maps

mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.  They are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studyingand organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

Mind maps can be used for:

  • problem solving
  • outline/framework design
  • structure/relationship representations
  • condensing material into a concise and memorable format

Mind-map tools that I have found useful are, Spicynodes,, SpiderScribeSlatebox  and mindmaple. Mind 42 is great for collaboration as its a web based application that doesn’t require your students to download any software and version control is not an issue. Another great web based application that can be used for mind maps is Prezi. MindMaple is a piece of software that is installed on your computer as opposed to being web based but it does offer considerably more functionality in terms of project management

Finding Websites again, again and again!!

Have you ever bookmarked a website that you found useful, but could not find the bookmark later? Having literally hundreds of websites bookmarked on various computers that I’ve used in the last few years – “loosing” bookmarks became a regular occurrence for me. That is until I discovered the concept of social bookmarking. Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren’t shared, merely bookmarks that reference them. Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them. There are various options open to you for social bookmarking. The one I like best is Diigo. Find out more about more about diigo on Sign up for free, it is incredibly simple.
