Posterous

The main idea behind Posterous is to let bloggers blog using email. Simply email your articles to Posterous and they do the rest. If you insert image or video links, they will show up as embedded!

The simplicity makes Posterous the best blogging service today for people that are not that “tech savy”.

Great for:
– blogging
– photo sharing
– cross-posting

Mind Maps

mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.  They are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studyingand organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

Mind maps can be used for:

  • problem solving
  • outline/framework design
  • structure/relationship representations
  • condensing material into a concise and memorable format

Mind-map tools that I have found useful are mind42.com, Spicynodes, Bubbl.us, SpiderScribeSlatebox  and mindmaple. Mind 42 is great for collaboration as its a web based application that doesn’t require your students to download any software and version control is not an issue. Another great web based application that can be used for mind maps is Prezi. MindMaple is a piece of software that is installed on your computer as opposed to being web based but it does offer considerably more functionality in terms of project management

Diigo – social bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online. Two of the more popular bookmarking services available are Diigo and Delicious Tagging is a significant feature of both of these social bookmarking systems, enabling users to organize their bookmarks in flexible ways. I have an account on both systems but my favourite by a long shot is Diigo.

Prezi – the alternative to powerpoint, an ideal tool for group work for students

Prezi Logo

I had a go at Prezi today – www.prezi.com. It takes a little getting used to but it is a nice alternative to powerpoint. Just like powerpoint you can spend more time messing about with the various settings changing the way things look on your presentation. So take my advice and remember that your target is to get the information across, not have it flash across the screen in bright colours and flashing lights.

Wordle

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends. Here is a sample image that I created.
The HEA strategy
This tool is free to use and is available through http://www.wordle.net/
I used wordle images as revision tools, by preparing an ideal answer to an exam and capturing a wordle image of the answer. I then integrated the image into a powerpoint slide and used it in class to generate a class discussion on what should be included in the ideal answer.
